5 tips for socializing my dog

How nice it is when your dog can behave well around other dogs or people. Unfortunately, this does not come naturally to every four-legged friend, but with these tips, it will surely improve! Especially with a young dog, good socialization is very important, because puppies are the most impressionable. We are happy to help you make your four-legged friend as social as possible!

  1. Walking in public

A social dog is a confident dog! Walking in public places can cause your dog to become more social. This will be exciting at first because there are many new stimuli and smells. To train this, it is helpful to walk the same route again so your dog can get used to it. It is also important to use the commands you normally use in public places.

2. Introduce your dog to different people

It is important to expose your dog (preferably from an early age) to different types of people. For example, if your dog is exposed to only women, dogs may become afraid of men and children. A heavy voice, larger people, or busy children can be exciting. If your dog is afraid of certain people, tell these people to approach your dog quietly with their hands in sight. Also, rewarding with treats with new people is positive.

3. Get your puppy socialized at a puppy class

A puppy class is always a good idea! Here your puppy will learn about new people and dogs and can get used to them. Learning commands and playing with other dogs will definitely do him good. And... it's also a fun outing for your dog (and for you!).

4. Introduce your dog to new stimuli

This could include accessories; such as helmets, hats and sunglasses. This, in fact, can sometimes trigger a fear response. Make sure you approach your dog calmly and keep your hands in sight. Introduce your dog to different vehicles, such as large cars, subways, trains and buses. It is important to build this slowly, though, as it can seem quite intimidating. Also introduce your dog to different landscapes and surfaces, such as the beach, forest, water, grass, snow and so on.

5. Be patient

Socialization takes a little more time with some four-legged friends. Do not push your dog, as this can make him more anxious. Reward your dog often and make him feel confident when he takes another step forward in socializing. Patience is a virtue!
