Walking with your (babysitting) dog is wonderful, but it sometimes comes with challenges. With proper preparation and a few practical routines, every walk will be safer, calmer and more fun for both of you.
1. Choose the right collar, harness and leash
The right equipment makes all the difference. For strong or pulling dogs, a well-fitting rig often more control and comfort than a collar. A landline is usually safer and clearer than a retractable belt, especially in the city. In doubt? Get advice at a pet store and check the fit regularly.

2. Gently teach pulling on the leash
Pulling is unpleasant and can lead to injury. Work on loose-leash walking: stay still as soon as the leash is taut and walk on only when the leash is loose again. Consistency always wins here. A puppy or basic course helps teach the right behavior from the start. Extra energy? Plan longer or mental challenges, such as sniffing walks or search games, to reduce tension.
3. Provide clear identification
Dogs can get spooked and run away. A nameplate with phone number on collar or harness is indispensable. In addition, consider microchipping and record the chip number for quick reunification if your dog gets lost.
4. Consider traffic safety and appointments
Avoid busy roads whenever possible, stay on the sidewalk and keep the leash short on narrow stretches and at intersections. If you have a babysitting dog out? Agree in advance with the owner on which signals and commands the dog responds best, such as "here," "wait," or "foot." Be predictable: steady pace, clear direction and timely rewards for desired behavior.
5. Beware of heat: avoid overheating
Dogs cool off to a limited extent via panting and paw pads. On hot days, go not outside during the hottest hours, choose shady routes and always bring water. Check the asphalt with your hand: too hot for your hand = too hot for paws. Is there somewhere safe for your dog to swim? A brief refreshment can help, provided water and current are safe.
