Dog gives high five to its owner while practicing tricks

10 fun tricks any dog can learn

Learning tricks is not only fun, but also a great way to strengthen the bond with your dog. It keeps his brain active, builds confidence and makes for happy times together. Below are 10 easy and fun tricks which almost any dog can learn!

1. Giving paw

A classic! Hold a treat in your hand, say "paw" and gently lift his paw. Reward as soon as he cooperates. Repeat this a few times a day.

2. High five

When your dog can paw well, you can extend this to a high five. Hold your hand slightly higher and reward each attempt to touch your hand.

3. Roles

Have your dog lie down and move a treat from his nose over his shoulder. Does he follow it? Then he rolls on his own. A fun challenge with funny results!

4. Rolling over on command

Extend rolling with a hand gesture and the command "roll!" Reward each successful attempt with lots of enthusiasm.

5. Slalom between your legs

Let your dog walk quietly between your legs while using treats as guides. Perfect for dogs who love exercise!

6. Kiss

Say "kiss" and hold your cheek or hand near his nose. Reward each attempt to make gentle contact. Cute and photogenic!

7. Lying dead

Say "pang!" or "dead" and have your dog lie on his side. Start with a lying position and reward as soon as he stays still - stagecraft at its best.

8. Reverse

Step toward him slowly and say "backwards." Reward as soon as he takes a few steps backwards. Good for concentration and body awareness.

9. Turning around

Use a treat to get him to turn in a circle. Later add the command "turn." Dogs often find this a funny exercise!

10. Play dead

Lay him on his side and say "play dead." With a little patience, this will become a favorite with any audience - success guaranteed!

Tip: keep it fun and positive

Training works best with patience, rewards and humor. Always stop when things are going well so your dog stays excited for the next session.
