You've probably experienced it before.... You are enjoying your homemade supper and suddenly a dog's face appears with questioning eyes and a drooling mouth. So much for enjoying your supper! Dogs are known to be good at begging. What can you do yourself to unlearn this behavior from your dog?
- Stop feeding from the dinner table
The more often you feed your dog from the dinner table, the more he comes to beg. If you want to unlearn begging you have to be strict and consistent about this. If you feed your dog only once, he will think it is normal and allowed. Fortunately, you can condition your dog to unlearn this behavior as well.
2. Stop rewarding your dog for his begging behavior and inform other people as well
Even though your dog looks so sweet (and we know this is hard) don't give him anything. If you give in to the begging it will only get worse and it is also unhealthy if you give the table scraps. Make sure the visitors don't give any more food either.
3. Give your dog a healthy snack
Of course, you want your dog to stay healthy. Therefore, don't give him table scraps, but dog snacks. For example, reward your dog with a snack when performing a trick, or when he has been good. This will give your dog a sense of accomplishment and he will be less likely to beg and plead for your attention while eating.
4. Eat at the same time as your dog
If you eat at the same time as your dog, he is distracted by munching on his own meal. After that, your dog will be satiated and less likely to stand at the table with pleading eyes. Although, some dogs always seem to be hungry....
5. Give your dog a little more attention
When your dog begs, it doesn't always mean he wants food. Sometimes dogs show this behavior when they need attention from their owner. If dogs beg often, it may be because this behavior has been rewarded with attention before. So they will start to repeat the same behavior. A long walk or a toy will make your dog less likely to beg for attention.
