New Year's Eve = oliebollen, champagne and ... fireworks. For many animals a source of stress. With these 8 practical tips, you can help your dog or cat get through the evening as relaxed as possible.
1. Be mindful of daytime fireworks
Walk your dog longer during the day as it is quiet; when popping, just short and safe. Last round preferably before 9 p.m. and always on a leash. Keep cat inside and offer a safe place.
2. Never leave an anxious pet alone
Stay home with fireworks anxiety or arrange for a trusted person. Leaving an animal alone in fear can exacerbate the problem - choose closeness and predictability.

3. Close curtains and close windows
Bright flashes and loud bangs are confusing. Close windows and curtains to muffle light and sound. If necessary, turn on a fan or white noise for extra masking.
4. Provide distractions
Chews, food puzzles and play provide endorphins and relaxation. Link something fun to the sound = positive association. Preferably start earlier with fireworks training.
5. Create a safe, quiet place
Let your animal choose its own hiding place (crate, closet, bathroom). Put down a familiar blanket or stuffed toy and stay close without forcing.

6. Stay calm and maintain routines
Animals mirror us. Act normal, breathe calmly and keep familiar routines. Offering support is allowed; comforting = not rewarding fear, but offering safety.

7. Don't punish your pet
Anxiety can lead to urinating in the house, trembling or fleeing. Punishment increases stress. Choose patience, distance and gentle guidance (cuddling only when your animal wants it).
8. Put on calm music
Music or white noise helps mask noise. Choose quiet genres at medium volume; there are even playlists specifically for animals.
