Have you noticed that your dog or foster dog dislikes some people right away? Fierce barking, running away or getting defensive is more common than you think. In fact, dogs respond to subtle signals that we humans sometimes don't even notice. Here are 5 reasons why dogs don't trust or like certain people as much.
1. The pitch of the voice
Research shows that dogs are more sensitive to high, happy tones than to low, angry voices. Friendly, calm speech activates their reward system, while loud or screaming voices cause stress. So talk calmly and kindly - that works better than a harsh correction.
2. Smell plays a big role
Dogs' sense of smell is extremely keen. They "read" people through scent and store that information. Dogs usually do not like the smells of vinegar, lemon or alcohol. They may also avoid someone who smells of other dogs or cats, especially if they have had negative experiences with them.
3. Body language and eye contact
Dogs understand nonverbal signals better than words. Direct, intense eye contact can be perceived as threatening. Rather, look with "soft" eyes and move quietly. Large arm gestures or a sudden hug can feel uncomfortable. Respect the dog's personal space.
4. How a person interacts with others
Dogs are loyal to their owners and unerringly notice how others treat their humans. Research shows that dogs also trust people who are unkind to their owners less. They mirror the emotions and attitudes of the one they love.
5. Past experiences or traumas
Dogs who have once been mistreated or had unpleasant experiences may react fearfully to people who resemble their former attacker - based on voice, scent or attitude, for example. Rescue dogs and dogs with trauma need extra time and understanding to regain confidence.
A good dog sitter in your area knows how important body language and energy are. With patience and respect, any dog can feel safe again.
