5 important tips for walking your (petsitting) dog

Walking with your four-legged friend is a very fun activity, but it can sometimes bring challenges! That is why it is important to take a few things into account during the walk.

  1. Get the right collar

The right collar is very important if you want to have an effective walk with your four-legged friend. There are different collars you can use, such as the regular collar, the harness or the retractable leash. Which leash suits your dog depends very much on the type of dog. For example, a large and strong dog that pulls a lot will benefit more from a harness than a collar. If you are unsure about which walking equipment is right for your four-legged friend, you can go to a pet store for advice.

2. Teach off hard pulling during the walk

Dogs can pull very hard during a walk and this is annoying for both parties. Our tip is to take a puppy course. At the puppy course, dogs learn good behavior and "rope pulling" can be corrected from an early age. Beyond that, there are energetic dogs that pull a lot. These dogs benefit from taking extra long walks.

3. Proper identification of your dog

A dog can always run away, which is why it is important to be able to properly identify the dog. A name tag with a phone number on the collar is never superfluous! You can also choose to have your four-legged friend microchipped. This is a safe and painless way to identify your dog.

4. Consider road safety

It is important that your four-legged friend listens to your commands. When walking a babysitting dog, it is important to agree with the owner what words the dog listens to. Ideally, avoid very busy roads, stay on the sidewalk, and keep the dog on a good leash.

5. Take care when it is very hot outside

Dogs cannot sweat. They get rid of their excess heat through the soles of their feet and by panting. So when it's very hot outside, it's important to always bring water for your four-legged friend (and yourself!). Don't go outside at the hottest times of the day, and if your dog can take a refreshing dip somewhere, of course, that's a good thing!
