5 facts about the German Shepherd, did you already know them?

1. The breed comes from Germany

Okay, this makes sense, of course - but do you know exactly how this went down?
In 1889, Max von Stephanitz noticed a wolf-like dog competing in a dog show in West Germany.
He was impressed by this dog's intelligence and discipline. After he took the dog home with him,
he founded the German Shepherd Dog Club and laid the foundation for the breed. His motto was useful and intelligent -
appearance only came second.

2. World War I brought them to the West

During World War I, German soldiers used many German shepherds as service dogs - for first aid, delivering messages
and as guard dogs. The Americans were so impressed that they took these dogs to the US. There they quickly became popular.
In fact, according to the American Kennel Club, the German shepherd was the second most popular dog in the country in 2014.

3. Some may suffer from dwarfism

It is not common, but some German shepherds suffer from dwarfism.
