Modern Animal Day (also: World Animal Day) was established in 1925 initiated by German writer and animal welfare activist Heinrich Zimmermann. His goal: to draw worldwide attention to the rights, protection and welfare of animals. The very first celebration took place in March, but it was soon decided to link the day to Oct. 4.

Why is Oct. 4 Animal Day?

Oct. 4 is the holiday of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. His attitude to life of respect and care for all living things made this date a logical choice. Since then, October 4 has symbolized awareness, compassion and responsibility towards animals - from pets to wild animals.
