About Viola and Barry
Name: Viola
Age: 40 years
Residence: Rotterdam (Oude Noorden)
Work & hobbies: Active in the neighborhood council and like to be outside
A new beginning for Barry
Barry is a true "poubelle" - a cheerful dumpster dog from Spain, whom Viola adopted. "At first he was extremely anxious," she says. "He crawled along walls and you weren't allowed to look at him. My previous dog Alfred, a brave crossbreed chihuahua, helped him by his example. Alfred taught Barry that he was safe, that he could trust me, and that the leash didn't have to be scary."
When Alfred died unexpectedly, Barry again became insecure. "But because he trusted me completely, he looked to me for support. That made our bond stronger. We really became a team."
Why she started babysitting through Petbnb
"After Alfred died, it felt empty, but I was hesitant to get a second dog again. When I discovered Petbnb, it seemed like the perfect solution - for me as well as for Barry. This way he doesn't always have to share, but he learns to get along with other dogs and people. And I meet new people myself. It makes him more independent and social."
Special babysitting dogs
"There are two dogs that I really have a special bond with. With the first one, I was able to help the owners see that their dog was not dangerous at all - he especially sensed their tension. And the second dog has become Barry's best friend. Their enthusiasm when they see each other is so heartwarming. Moreover, his owner has since become a good friend."
How she recognizes a good match
"You can often see right away what the bond is between a dog and its owner - that says a lot. In addition, Barry is a great judge. He is patient and tolerant. If he growls, I know immediately: this is not a good match."
What she learned from babysitting
- In the beginning, I said yes to everything. I learned to schedule rest days as well, especially when going on long hikes.
- I listen better to Barry - he feels unerringly what is right or wrong.
Favorite hiking spot
"The woods around Rotterdam. Dogs can run free there and often there is a little lake to swim or roll around in the sand."
Viola's tips for other babysitters
- Follow your instinct. Owners often think their dog is very well behaved, but a new environment can change a lot. As a sitter, you also have to think about your own peace of mind.
- Have a backup plan. Especially when owners are on vacation. Something can always happen, so make sure you know who to reach if something goes wrong.
