Are you getting a four-legged friend in your home soon, or will you be babysitting for a while? What a treat! You're probably already all set, but is your home? It is important to make your home safe for the pet you are going to care for (temporarily). With these tips, you can make your home a safe environment for a four-legged friend!
- Clean up hazardous products
Make sure dangerous products, such as chemicals, medications and toxic foods are out of your pet's reach. Place these products high up in a closet. If you have a closet with a lock, that is obviously the perfect place to store these products. Some dogs and cats are very clever and can reach anything. If you don't have a closet with a lock, in that case you can use childproof latches. It is also important to store loose cords and plugs from installations or lamps.
3. Remove poisonous plants
Some plants are toxic to pets, such as Aloe Vera, Hydrangea and Hyacinth. Find out which plants you have in your home that may be toxic. You don't have to throw the plants away, but you can gift them to someone without pets, for example.
2. Provide a safe place where your pet can retreat
Choose a place in the house where your pet can feel at home and where he can retreat to sleep and recharge. This will be your dog or cat's domain where he or she will feel safe. You can make this place your own by placing his or her toys and stuffed animals there. For cats, you can also create a spot in the window frame because cats like to look outside.
5. Clean up clothes and shoes
Dogs and cats can still get into clothes and shoes. Not only is this a waste of your belongings, it is also dangerous for your four-legged friend. Buttons and laces create choking hazards. Dogs also have a habit of eating socks or underwear. So clean these up properly!
4. Provide a good fence outside your home
Do you have a nice garden or a lovely balcony and would like your pet to enjoy it too? Then make sure you have a good fence. Place a fence, for example, or cordon off your garden or balcony with wire mesh. If you have a cat that you like to keep in the garden, don't put a container or chairs next to the fence. This is because his climbing skills will make him fly over the fence.
6. Clean up other objects that pets can choke on
Collect all small objects, such as marbles, chips or other pieces of objects that your dog or cat can choke on or injure itself by. Especially if you have small children at home, there may be some toys lying around. Make sure you store them neatly in tightly closed boxes and keep them out of reach of your pet.
Do you suspect that your dog or cat has eaten something weird? If so, don't hesitate to contact your veterinarian right away!
