Your dog is obviously your buddy and you are two hands in one! But, dogs are different from humans and therefore like different things. We'd like to tell you what dogs secretly don't like so much, when you might have thought they did!
- Using too many words and not enough body language
Dogs naturally understand quite a lot of words, but whole sentences they find difficult to understand. If you want to teach your four-legged friend a trick, it is best to combine it with proper body language. For example, if you say stay, and then you walk away, it is very confusing for the dog.
2. Hugging your dog
Humans really like hugs, but for dogs it's a little different! Because dogs do not have arms, they cannot hug properly. Therefore, they sometimes experience our way of hugging as threatening, because it is intense for a dog. It is better to hug him in a slightly milder way, so that your arms do not form themselves completely around the dog.
3. Not being allowed to sniff
A dog can smell as much as 100,000 times better than a human. It gathers information through smells, unlike humans. Humans can hear and see much better than dogs. During a walk, a dog sniffs everything, he picks up information from other dogs and from the world. So it is also a bad sign if you constantly pull a dog along during a walk so that he cannot sniff. A dog can become restless and even aggressive from this.
4. Looking a dog straight in the eye and walking toward him
This can be perceived as threatening by a dog. After all, a dog does not know what you mean by this. With your own dog this is often not such a problem, but an unknown dog can become afraid and even react aggressively. It is better to look away for a moment when you approach the dog and calmly use your voice to reassure him.
5. Constantly petting the dog's head or face
This can be experienced as irritating by the dog. Of course you can pet him sometimes over the head and he likes this for a while, but constantly and especially in the face is no fun! Dogs often like to be stroked on their back and belly.
6. Keeping your dog on a very tight leash
This can be very stressful for your dog, making him feel restricted. With a large, strong dog it can be a challenge to let the leash hang loosely. A dog training class can teach you how to properly leash your dog.
7. Stress from the owner
If you are tense, there is a good chance that your dog will copy this feeling. In fact, dogs are very good at mirroring. The calmer you are, the calmer your dog will be! Put on some classical music, it will not only calm you down but also your dog!
