Our dogs are, of course, our greatest buddies. Therefore, we want to know everything about them! You probably already know quite a bit about your four-legged friend, but below you will read facts that will absolutely amaze you!
- Dog noses are wet to help absorb odor chemicals
A dog's nose produces a special mucus that allows dogs to better absorb the chemicals of smell. After this, they lick their nose to taste, so they understand what the smell is.
2. The Beatles' song, "A Day in the Life" has a frequency that only dogs can hear!
Paul McCartney said in a 2003 interview that there was a special frequency added to the song that only dogs can hear. Put the song on for your dog and see what happens!
3. The longest dog in the world is 111.7 cm!
The longest dog in the world measures a whopping 111.7 centimeters. This makes the Great Dane Zeus the longest dog in the world and is in the Guinness Book of World Records.
4. Basenji dogs don't bark, they yodel!
If you thought all dogs in the world bark, you're wrong. The Basenji dog yodels, wails or even screams!
5. Newfoundlands are fantastic lifeguards
Newfoundlander dogs are the best lifeguards you can think of. After all, they have water-repellent fur and flippers! They were originally bred as fishermen's helpers and to save people from drowning. Some owners have even reported that their Newfoundlander tries to "save" them while swimming!
6. 30% of dalmatians are deaf in one ear
This is due to a gene called the extreme fur gene, which causes the coat of dalmatians to be white and (in some) the eyes to be blue. The dalmatians that have more and larger black spots are less likely to be deaf!
7. The Saluki is the oldest breed of dog
The breed was kept as a royal pet in Ancient Egypt. In fact, the Saluki dates back to 329 BC. The Saluki is thereby listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest dog breed in the world.
