Poodles these days are often seen as dogs that involve luxury and wealth but was this always the case?
1. The poodle was actually bred for hunting
They are very athletic dogs and therefore excellent swimmers. This, of course, came in super handy when hunting waterfowl. Poodles even have a kind of "soft" mouth so that they could carefully pick up wounded or dead birds.
2. Surely the peculiar way of their shaved coats has a purpose
Or yes, this used to be mostly the purpose of the fur. They needed protection from the cold water while hunting but too much wet fur would become too heavy to swim with. Because of this, the fur was shaved strategically so that certain areas would still be protected.
3. Poodles come in as many as 3 varieties
The poodle is the only breed that comes in three different sizes: standard, miniature and the toy poodle. These 3 names only describe the size of the dog. In fact, the American Kennel Club does assign them all to the same breed.
4. A Poodle's coat never stops growing
Of course this sounds familiar to Poodle owners but for our sitters who didn't know this yet, if you don't comb and trim a Poodle's coat enough you will get a rasta Poodle with a lot of matted fur. So this does require some attention. On the other hand, they are hypoallergenic and thus super popular among dog lovers with allergies.
5. Poodles are really mega smart
Around the world, the poodle is the second smartest breed, the Border Collie being number 1. This makes them very easy to train and they were hugely popular in the circus and movies as a result.
