Of course, leaving your dog with a new sitter for the first time can be exciting. For both you and your dog. Fortunately, our sitters have a lot of experience with this and are happy to share their tips. Everyone is different and some are easier to leave than others. Here are 4 tips that often work well for our sitters
Tip 1: Walk a lap right away
When you, the owner, have left, the dog is often confused as to why he/she does not just go with you again. It can help if you immediately go a small round and the babysitter dog comes home to the house of the babysitter. He/she then understands better that this is the place where they stay for now and that the owner is not still behind the door.
Tip 2: Distract the dog during the owner's departure
While the owner is leaving, try to get the babysitting dog to do some tricks right away and reward them with treats or a game the dog likes. This way they are less likely to realize that the owner has left without them. After that, act as relaxed as possible and let the dog sniff around the house and explore the new place. We often hear that your behavior is projected into your dog's behavior. So try to act as normal as possible, then your dog will also find the situation normal as quickly as possible.
Tip 3: Make a preliminary introduction to the sitter's home
Most dogs are incredibly good at recognizing places. If they have been in the house of the sitter once a few days in advance, this place will feel more familiar the second time around. This already makes for a more relaxed dog upon arrival.
Tip 4: Provide an activity for your babysitting dog
If your dog super enjoys chewing on a bone, give it to the sitter. The same goes for a game or practicing a new trick. Distraction works best 😉
