3 tips for separation anxiety in your four-legged friend

Separation anxiety occurs when its owner leaves home. It is often accompanied by stress, confusion and insecurity in the dog. How can I recognize separation anxiety in my dog?

  • Panting and drooling
  • Crying, barking or wailing
  • Peeing or defecating
  • Destructive behavior; such as chewing on objects that are painful to the dog
  • Escape; sometimes the dog tries to flee the house to find its owner
  • Polar bears at the door to see if the owner comes back soon

What can I do myself if my dog suffers from separation anxiety?

  1. Make sure your dog has gotten plenty of exercise before you leave the house. When dogs are tired, they mind being left alone much less than when they are full of energy.
  2. Dogs are very sensitive to your energy. So make sure you don't leave stressed or anxious, that way your dog will think something is wrong. It is best to go out the door calmly and also come home again in a calm manner. This way you teach your dog that leaving and coming home is not a big deal at all, but the most normal thing in the world.
  3. With puppies, it is important to teach leaving in steps. Make sure your puppy is on a mat or rug (something he often lies on) and leave the room in a slow and calm manner. When you also return in a calm manner, you can give him a treat. This goes in steps and you can build up by staying out of the room a little longer each time.

With these tips, there's a good chance your dog will get over his separation anxiety! So often the energy of the owners themselves is a huge trigger. However, professional help may be needed with your dog's separation anxiety. The veterinarian or a dog trainer could help you further in this regard.
