"Roll," surely a very special trick for a dog and it is fairly easy to learn! Especially when he or she has already mastered the basic tricks. Especially "lie down" is important here. And for our Petbnb babysitters, how fun if you have taught your babysitter a new trick after a day of babysitting! Quickly check out our step-by-step guide to the perfect roll!
Let's get started!
- When your dog lies on the ground, take a treat in your hand and bring it from the nose to the shoulder. If your dog follows it should automatically lie on his/her side to reach the treat. Once this succeeds you give the reward. Repeat this at least 5 times.
- Now that your four-legged friend has this under control and is comfortable with lying on his/her side, this time bring the treat just a little further than the shoulder, over your dog to the ground. When your dog follows the treat again and lies down on his/her other side like this, it goes super well and you reward again! Repeat this step several times as well.
- Now try practicing step 2 several times but then using an empty hand in the same way to lead your dog to a roll. Then give the reward at the end with your other hand.
- Once the previous 3 steps are successful we are going to add the command. Once you have said the word "roll" bring your hand from the nose, past the shoulder, to the ground so your dog knows again what to do. Again, give the reward right away as soon as your dog lies on his or her other side. Repeat this again at least 5 times!
- In the last step, we are also going to try to omit the hand gesture. Give the command "roll" and give your dog about 5 seconds to figure out what you have asked. If it fails then help your dog with the empty hand gesture and then just try again until your dog realizes what is being asked of him/her when saying "roll"!
- CONGRATULATIONS! You have taught your (babysitting) dog a new trick! Don't forget to keep it up now because yes, dogs can learn things too and that would be a shame.....
Should it not work out in a day, of course that is not at all crazy. Every dog is unique and learns in his/her own way. If your dog finds it a little more difficult to learn such a big trick in one go, you can also try to teach the command for step 1 first. A suggestion for this is "on your side". Skip steps 2 and 3 and, with steps 4 and 5, teach this command first until your dog knows what is being asked of him/her after you say "on your side." From here, it may be easier to roll your dog because by then he/she will be completely familiar with the command "on your side."
Have fun showing everyone what great trick your (babysitting) dog has mastered, and especially share this with your friends so they too know how to teach it to their (babysitting) dog. Who knows, maybe in the future your dogs will do one big joint roll at the same time!
