6 tips to give your dog some refreshment on hot days

As most of you know, dogs do not perspire in the same way as humans. They can lose heat by panting and sweat only through the glands in the soles of their feet. This causes them to heat up very quickly so as an owner it is important to know the ways to keep your sweet four-legged friend cool.

Tip 1: Water, water and more water

Always provide fresh and cool water. Of course, this is important not only with hot weather but with this heat they drink extra much. You can possibly cool the water extra with ice cubes. Make sure your dog does not drink too much or too cold water! This again can cause stomach problems.

Tip 2: from bottom to top

Dogs cool from the bottom up. So it works very effectively to give your dog cooling on the paws and the bottom of the belly. A good option for this is a cold or wet towel that your dog can lie on.

Tip #3: A car is not a basket

In summer, never but never leave your dog alone in the car. The temperature can reach 50 degrees Celsius very quickly, even with an outside temperature of 20 degrees. Shade and a window open is often still considered enough coolness but even this can become dangerous for your dog.

Tip 4: Play

Play especially early in the morning and in the afternoon/evening. This is more comfortable for both you and your dog. Do you know a place where you can swim with your dog? Do so especially!

Tip 5: Eat less? Don't worry

Your dog may have less appetite than usual. This is not at all strange since the warm temperatures cause reduced activity which lowers your dog's energy needs.

Tip 6: asphalt and concrete

Try to avoid asphalt and concrete as much as possible. This traps heat and thus very quickly becomes much warmer than the outside temperature which can be very unpleasant for your dog's foot pads. You can test if it is too warm by holding your hand against it for 7 to 10 seconds. When this does not feel pleasant you know that it is also too hot for your dog.
