10 surprising allergies in dogs

Dogs, like people, can suffer from allergies. Some breeds such as Retrievers, Terriers, Setters and flat-faced breeds (Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Frenchies and so on) are more prone to allergies than others. Here are 10 allergies that may surprise you.

1. Pollen

Pollen from grass, trees, flowers and weeds can cause dogs to suffer from allergy symptoms such as inflamed skin or itching.

2. Mold spores

Mold is the second most common allergy for dogs and usually causes skin irritation. You can reduce the amount of mold in your home by checking your home for mold growth. Remove visible mold and clean or replace filters in range hoods or air ducts.

3. Animal and human dander

Believe it or not but your dog may even be allergic to you! Dogs allergic to dander usually have itchy and/or inflamed skin and may sneeze or get a runny nose. Veterinarians can treat an allergy to dander with anti-allergy injections or eye drops.

4. Feathers

Even if you don't have birds in your home, your dog may still suffer from feather allergy. For example, dogs with such an allergy may react allergically to feathers found in down quilts and pillows.

5. Cigarette smoke

Toxins on a smoker's hands can cause an allergic reaction. So quit smoking or wash your hands properly after smoking. Of course, smoking with the dog in the house is absolutely not good for dogs with such allergies.

6. Food (e.g., beef, chicken, pork, corn, wheat or soy)

Food allergies can also appear or disappear later in life. They can cause itchy skin, chronic ear infections or stomach upset such as vomiting and diarrhea.

7. Dust and dust mites

Dust and dust mites (tiny microscopic spiders that live on mattresses, couches and carpets) can cause some dogs to suffer from a skin condition called atopic dermatitis.

If your dog suffers from a dust allergy, it is a good idea to clean your dog's basket and rugs and stuffed animals at least once a week and vacuum the house twice a week.

8. Prescription drugs

Dogs can have allergic reactions to medications. Common reactions include a swollen face, itching and hives.

9. Cleaning products

Cleaning products with spray or aerosols can be the cause. Therefore, use these cleaning products as little as possible.

10. Perfume

Some dogs are sensitive to perfumes or other similar products such as home air fresheners. So if you are a fan of a nice smell, it is better to spray a dot of perfume outside the house instead of in the house.
