Thunderstorms and dogs don't always go well together. It often means a frightened (babysitting) dog. Is your dog also so afraid of thunderstorms and are you at your wit's end? Here are six practical tips to calm your dog when the storm hits.<\/p>\n

1. Distract your dog<\/h3>\n

Thunderstorms can often be heard from afar. Use that lead time to play or train as the sound approaches. That way your dog will learn that thunder is not scary and his attention will stay with you.<\/p>\n

2. Stay calm yourself<\/h3>\n

Your calmness is contagious. Does your dog get restless, shiver or bark? Speak to him gently, offer physical closeness and breathe calmly. This will help him feel safe.<\/p>\n

3. Never punish your dog<\/h3>\n

Punishment is counterproductive and increases anxiety. Instead, offer support, distraction and safety so that your dog does not associate thunderstorms with negative experiences.<\/p>\n
