\n New Year's Eve = oliebollen, champagne and ... fireworks. For many animals a source of stress. With these 8 practical tips, you can help your dog or cat get through the evening as relaxed as possible.\n <\/p>\n

1. Be mindful of daytime fireworks<\/h3>\n

Walk your dog longer during the day as<\/em> it is quiet; when popping, just short and safe. Last round preferably before 9 p.m. and always on a leash. Keep cat inside and offer a safe place.<\/p>\n

2. Never leave an anxious pet alone<\/h3>\n

Stay home with fireworks anxiety or arrange for a trusted person. Leaving an animal alone in fear can exacerbate the problem - choose closeness and predictability.<\/p>\n

3. Close curtains and close windows<\/h3>\n

Bright flashes and loud bangs are confusing. Close windows and curtains to muffle light and sound. If necessary, turn on a fan or white noise for extra masking.<\/p>\n

4. Provide distractions<\/h3>\n

Chews, food puzzles and play provide endorphins and relaxation. Link something fun to the sound = positive association. Preferably start earlier with fireworks training<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5. Create a safe, quiet place<\/h3>\n

Let your animal choose its own hiding place (crate, closet, bathroom). Put down a familiar blanket or stuffed toy and stay close without forcing.<\/p>\n

Animals mirror us. Act normal, breathe calmly and keep familiar routines. Offering support is allowed; comforting = not rewarding fear, but offering safety.<\/p>\n

Music or white noise helps mask noise. Choose quiet genres at medium volume; there are even playlists specifically for animals.<\/p>\n
