The Samoyed: a friendly and energetic family dog

The Samoyed is known for its smile, gentle nature and energy. This Spitz-like family friend loves being together as well as being outdoors. Here you can read what you need to know about character, exercise, coat care, nutrition and health.

Origin & character

Originally from Siberia, where he served as a pulling and working dog. Samoyeds are social, friendly and very affectionate. They thrive in families that have time for contact, play and training. Being alone should be built up gently. [link to article on topic]

Exercise & activities

Count on 1-2 hours of activity per day: brisk walks, tracking or brain work and play. They enjoy tug and pull sports, as well as sniffing courses and obedience. Alternate exertion with recovery to avoid overexertion.

Coat maintenance

The dense, double coat requires attention. Brush several times a week (more often during shedding periods) and work from undercoat to top coat. Do not allow full trim; targeted trimming (feet/hindquarters) can be done. Keep skin and coat dry after rain or snow.

Health & Nutrition

Generally robust, but watch for hip dysplasia and eye problems. Maintain a healthy weight and schedule periodic checkups. Choose quality food with appropriate energy intake and good fatty acids; some Samoyeds respond better to grain-poor or grain-free. Introduce changes gradually. [link to article on topic]

Living with a family

Gentle and child-friendly when properly socialized. Teach children respectful contact and give the dog its own resting places. Regularity in walks and play makes for a stable, happy dog.
